🔬 Research at the College of Engineering (CENG)
At the College of Engineering (CENG), research is more than a mission—it’s a movement. Guided by the University of Duhok's Strategic Plan (2023–2038) and in alignment with the Kurdistan Accrediting Association for Education (KAAE), our research ecosystem fuels innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
Established in 2017 as a unified and collaborative entity, the Engineering Research Center consolidates the expertise of all engineering departments. Our researchers work across disciplines to create transformative solutions to regional and global challenges—linking theory with practice, and ideas with impact.
In support of UOD’s vision to become a globally ranked institution, our research is structured around four high-impact pillars:
Sustainable Infrastructure & Smart Cities
Water Security, Energy Transition & Climate Resilience
Digital Engineering & Smart Technologies
Architectural Identity, Heritage & Built Environment
Structural health monitoring and seismic performance
Concrete durability and strengthening techniques
Urban hydrology, flash flood mitigation, and rainwater harvesting
Hydraulic modeling, aquaculture systems, and water distribution
Pavement evaluation and smart traffic systems
GIS, GNSS and 3D modeling applications in infrastructure
Local architecture and cultural conservation
Theory and history of architecture in Kurdistan
Smart, sustainable building design
Interior, landscape, and adaptive reuse design strategies
Renewable energy systems and HVAC efficiency
Heat transfer and applied mechanics
Optimization of fluid dynamics and vibration analysis
Smart mechanical systems for energy efficiency
Our research center is powered by a diverse team of experts across:
Civil & Water Resources Engineering
Mechanical & Energy Engineering
Electrical, Computer & Power Systems
Architectural & Environmental Design
Surveying, Geotechnical & Structural Monitoring
With access to 22 specialized laboratories, we support research from idea to impact—equipping students and faculty with the tools to innovate and collaborate across sectors.
We foster a research-rich academic environment where:
Students engage in real-world projects through their capstone design (USPs)
Graduate researchers lead interdisciplinary innovations
Research results contribute directly to industry, municipalities, and global knowledge
Presentations, publications, and workshops are integrated into every research stage
We actively seek partnerships with:
National & international universities
Government agencies & NGOs
Engineering firms & tech companies
Public utilities & municipalities
Through joint projects, training, technology transfer, and policy-driven initiatives, we aim to build stronger connections between academia, industry, and society.
Let’s build the future together.

🎓 Meet Our Research Leaders
Methodology can be one of the most challenging aspects for doctoral researchers. When we conduct research into education and/or technology, we can be confronted with a potentially confusing array of options. This is true even for those using a well-established approach, but can be especially acute if combining approaches in a mixed-methods study or trying to develop a completely new way of doing research.
